ALBUQUERQUE, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Albuquerque police Thursday searched for suspects after a security officer was shot in the stomach with his own gun near Kirkland Air Force Base.
The wounded airman was in stable condition at the University of New Mexico Hospital after being shot overnight during an altercation with four people inside the gated Maxwell housing area next to the base, CNN reported. The housing is adjacent to, but not part of Kirkland Air Force Base, and is on federal property.
KREQ-TV, Albuquerque, said the officer was shot with his own weapon.
Authorities called in a SWAT team and were using specially trained dogs to hunt for the suspects and planned to speak to the wounded officer as he recovers from surgery.
The incident did not affect operations at the airbase.
