Fort Bliss shooter was a retired soldier

FORT BLISS, Texas, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The FBI said Tuesday a man who was shot and killed after shooting two women at Fort Bliss, Texas, has been identified as Steven Kropf of nearby El Paso.

Investigators said Kropf, 63, was a retired Army sergeant, CNN reported. The FBI said in a news release it was not clear why Kropf shot the women, one of whom -- Bettina Maria Goins, 44, of El Paso -- died as a result of the shooting at a base convenience store.

An Army guard fatally shot Kropf.

"It has been determined this was an isolated criminal incident and not terrorism-related," the FBI said.

It was not clear whether Kropf knew his victims, CNN said.

The other shooting victim, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Fort Bliss -- home to the First Armored Division -- is situated on the Texas-New Mexico border, not far from El Paso.
