Ad to warn Cuomo about fracking

NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- An environmental group said Wednesday it has taken a full-page ad in The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer to warn New York's governor about fracking.

Food & Water Watch, based in Washington, said in a statement the ad in Thursday's newspaper warns Gov. Andrew Cuomo "his future presidential prospects will be seriously hindered by any decision to allow hydraulic fracturing [fracking] -- the highly controversial natural gas drilling method -- in New York state."

The group said the ad was signed by more than 100 organizations from across the country, and will greet Cuomo as he arrives in Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention.

Hydraulic fracking uses a fluid to force oil and natural gas from layers of rock. Critics say it can cause water contamination or even earthquakes.
