Virginia man sentenced on terror charges

ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 13 (UPI) -- A Virginia immigrant from Pakistan Friday was handed a 12-year sentence for providing material support to foreign terrorists.

Jubair Ahmad, 24, also was sentenced to five years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III in federal court in Alexandria for providing Lashkar-e-Toiba with funds and other support related to the 2008 Mumbai attack.

"We've seen a sharp increase in terrorists' use of social networking services like YouTube to reach a worldwide audience," U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride said in a release. "Jubair Ahmad was deeply committed to LeT's violent aims."

Court records indicate Ahmad attended LeT camps as a teenager. He moved with his family from Pakistan to the United States in 2007.

Ahmad pleaded guilty Dec. 2 to helping prepare a propaganda video extolling jihad, highlighted by atrocities inflicted on Muslims. At the sentencing hearing, the government presented evidence Ahmad tried to recruit others to attend LeT training camps and expressed his intention to return to Pakistan and be part of a martyrdom mission.
