6.0 quake recorded off Oregon coast

BANDON, Ore., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A 6-magnitude earthquake off the Oregon coast went largely unnoticed except by seismologists who recorded it and a few citizens, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 7:31 p.m. local time Tuesday about 159 miles west of Coos Bay, 182 miles west-southwest of Newport, 187 miles northwest of Brookings and 236 miles west-southwest of Salem.

The quake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles, the USGS said.

KGW-TV, Portland, reported the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said the temblor, which was not strong enough to produce a tsunami, was centered about 152 miles out to sea.

The Coos County Sheriff's Office said it had not received any calls from anyone who thought they felt the quake and no damage was reported.

The Sky Valley Chronicle, of East Snohomish County, Wash., reported about 40 people contacted the National Earthquake Information Center Web site in Golden, Colo. Most of them, in northern California and southern Oregon, described the temblor as "weak" or "barely felt," the newspaper said.
