Police kill alleged New Orleans carjacker

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A New Orleans man suspected of carjacking was shot to death early Tuesday after allegedly pointing a gun at an officer, police said.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said it received a report of carjacking about 11:48 p.m. Monday. A man reported a carjacker took his 1999 Jeep Cherokee at gunpoint on Causeway Boulevard. He told deputies the suspect was wearing dark clothing and a blue jacket, and was heading south on the boulevard.

After leading police on a high-speed chase, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed it near a business on Dakin Street. He exited the vehicle but refused to surrender and allegedly trained his handgun on an officer, sheriff's office spokesman John Fortunato told The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune.

"The suspect refused to comply, pointed a handgun at one of our officers and fired at him. Three of the officers who were involved in the pursuit returned fire striking the suspect several times," he said.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
