Irwin weakens to tropical depression

MIAMI, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Irwin petered out into a tropical depression Monday night as it moved across the Pacific Ocean far off the Mexican coast, U.S. forecasters said.

Irwin, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, was about 685 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, and moving east at 7 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 11 p.m. EDT advisory.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

The storm was forecast keep heading east and to pick up some forward speed during the next day or so, and then turn toward to the east-northeast, the forecasters said. No major change in strength was expected.
