Smoke bomb breaks up Hitler party

LYONS, Ill., April 19 (UPI) -- A restaurant in Illinois was evacuated after someone set off a smoke bomb during a party celebrating the birthday of Adolf Hitler, police said.

The bomb ended the Saturday party at P. J. Klem's Restaurant & Banquet Hall in Lyons that had featured decorated cakes and Nazi banners, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police said a man entered the restaurant, ordered a sandwich, then went into a restroom and set off the smoke bomb.

"The description we have to work off of is very vague," Lyons police Chief Harley Schinker said.

The party was organized by Art Jones, chairman of the America First Committee, who said about 60 people attended to celebrate both the 122nd anniversary of Hitler's birth and the April 12, 1861, start of the Civil War.

The party included two cakes, one decorated with the words, "Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler" and one with the phrase, "The South Was Right. White Men Fight," Jones said.

No serious damage or injuries were caused by the smoke bomb, but police evacuated the facility and closed it while the Cook County sheriff's police bomb squad searched the building, the Tribune reported.
