Police responded to a call of a gunshot being fired about 1 p.m. Sunday and discovered a male victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The other student voluntarily surrendered himself to police officers," Mid-Atlantic President Dr. Clay Perkins said.

The small, 180-student campus was put on lockdown following the shooting.

"The why questions are abundant at the moment," Perkins said. "I don't even have those answers."

Local ministers and counselors would be available to help students through their grief, school officials said.

"The mood is just shock," Perkins said. "There are lots of hugs and lots of tears. The university is in pain."
