Amanda Knox facing slander charge

PERUGIA, Italy, June 1 (UPI) -- American Amanda Knox, 22, went on trial again in Italy Tuesday, this time on charges of slandering Italian police officers, her lawyer said.

Knox, who was sentenced to 26 years in prison for her part in the 2007 slaying of British roommate Meredith Kercher, accused police of hitting her during an interrogation session, The Daily Telegraph of Britain reported.

It was the first time Knox was seen in public since she was convicted in December.

The former University of Washington student is appealing her homicide conviction but faces separate legal proceedings for slander.

Her lawyer argued Tuesday that it is inappropriate for the slander charge to be heard by Judge Claudia Matteini because she was involved in one of the preliminary hearings in the Kercher case.

The slander case was adjourned until June 17 when another judge is likely to step in.
