BOULDER, Colo., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A Colorado man faces attempted murder charges for allegedly forcing his ex-girlfriend into a round of Russian roulette, authorities said.

Garrett Odel Brierly, 39, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, menacing, third-degree assault and reckless endangerment, the Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera reported Monday.

Dallas Mason told police she had informed Brierly she was moving out of their house, and he went for a drive, came back drunk and grabbed a pistol, the newspaper said. Brierly held the gun to her forehead and pulled the trigger, then pointed it near but not directly at his own head and pulled again, she said.

The gun fired on the fourth try while pointing skyward next to Brierly's head, Mason told officers.

"I saw the gun, and I saw him close the chamber," she said. "He pointed it right at my face and pulled the trigger. It didn't go off. Then he held it by his ear, straight up in the air, and it didn't go off."

When the gun finally fired, Mason said, she panicked, escaped and called police, who arrested Brierly.
