Bolivian leader in peace talks

LA PAZ, Bolivia, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- High-stakes talks are taking place in Bolivia this weekend as President Evo Morales tries to keep his country whole.

Morales, a leftist, is in negotiations with governors of largely white provinces in the east who want autonomy, CNN reported Saturday. The talks began Thursday.

Tensions erupted this month between the two sides, leaving at least 30 dead.

Four provinces controlled by the opposition are also seeking a greater share of natural gas revenues.

Julian Torrico, a peasant leader, said he and other Morales supporters will storm the eastern city of Santa Cruz if the talks do not yield progress.
