PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell's endorsement of Hillary Clinton was aimed at getting the senator votes in his home state, New Jersey and Delaware, a report says.
New Jersey and Delaware, which mostly know about the popular governor through Philadelphia
media outlets, are among the 22 states voting on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.
With the New York senator at his side, Rendell mentioned "the tri-state area" and "New Jersey and Delaware" repeatedly and said he'd go to either state to campaign for her if asked, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday.
After Clinton departed, Rendell said that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, called him about 2 1/2 months ago to ask that the governor endorse her. But at that point, Rendell said, he wasn't ready to endorse anyone, the newspaper reported.
Rendell said "once the field was cleared," referring to the withdrawals of Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson earlier this month, he told the Clinton campaign "they could have my endorsement any time they wanted it."
