Mueller downplays bin Laden tape

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller said al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden's latest video tape does not overtly predict a terror attack.

Mueller said the tape, released last week as the terrorist mastermind's first public message since October 2004, does not necessarily mean a terror attack is forthcoming, CNN reported Tuesday.

"The tape is still being analyzed, but this isn't the first time he has encouraged those in the United States or elsewhere, in Western Europe, to convert to Islam, and there has not necessarily been any correlation between statements that he or (Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaida's second in command) have made in the past and attacks," Mueller said.

Mueller said bin Laden's references to current events, such as the Democratic-led U.S. Congress and new French President Nicolas Sarkozy, were nothing more than the result of modern information gathering tools.

"It is an indication we live in a globalized world, the world of the Internet," he said. "No matter where you are in this globe you can tap into the Internet and immediately pull up the media, you, and be up on current affairs.”
