ANKARA, Turkey, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert asked Turkish officials to adopt economic sanctions against Iran as he began a two-day visit to Turkey.
Olmert told the Turkish newspaper Milliyet that sanctions would make Iran reconsider its nuclear program, Haaretz reported.
"If economic sanctions were imposed, Iran would be forced to review its position," Olmert said. "I believe that Turkey and many other countries will need to change their ties with Iran."
Olmert arrived in Turkey late Wednesday and met the same night with members of the local Jewish community. His schedule for Thursday included meetings with Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and other top officials.
Olmert also planned to lay a wreath at the tomb of Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish state.
