Pace questions Iran's role in Iraq

AGANA, Guam, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Peter Pace says he wants precise evidence to back up U.S. claims Iran's government is helping Iraq insurgents.

Wednesday marked the third time since Monday that the new chief has appeared to challenge the Bush administration's claims Tehran is involved with helping Shiite militias in Iraq.

Sunday, military experts who asked to remain anonymous, showed reporters in Baghdad ammunition and launchers they claimed had been manufactured in Iran. In response, while on his way home, Pace told Voice of America that wasn't sufficient proof.

"That does not translate to that the Iranian government ... for sure, is directly involved in doing this," he said.

Tuesday, White House spokesman Tony Snow denied in a CNN interview the general's comments were a challenge to the Bush administration.

"There are Iranians in Iraq. There's no question about that, correct? So, where's the credibility problem?" Snow said.
