Tutu awarded Gandhi Peace Prize

NEW DELHI, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has won India's highest international honor, the Gandhi Peace Prize.

The award was conferred on the Nobel Prize laureate by Indian President Abdul Kalam Friday at a New Delhi ceremony.

Tutu dedicated the prize to "the people of South Africa, to the freedom of Darfur and to Aung San Suu Kyi", the Burmese human rights leader held under house arrest. He won the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his fight against apartheid in South Africa.

The Gandhi award carries a cash prize of 10 million rupees, about $227,000.
