Moratinos meets Palestinian leader in Gaza

GAZA, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the new Palestinian unity government.

"Today is a positive step, in principle we are in favor of the unity government, but we must study the details and will give a formal answer on Friday in Brussels," said Moratinos, when asked if the Spanish government and the European Union would accept a unity government that included Hamas members.

Abbas on Monday said he had reached an agreement with Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh to form a unity government between Fatah and Hamas.

Moratinos stated the EU's support for the Palestinian people, saying, "We are looking forward to see the gates and the borders open so the Palestinian people can live in stability."

"I think the new unity government will be able to deal with the Arab community and the international community," said Abbas.
