Mexico: Jackson to talk race with Fox

MEXICO CITY, May 18 (UPI) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson is in Mexico for talks with President Vicente Fox about his racially charged remarks about blacks.

Fox told a group of U.S. businessmen in Mexico City last week "there is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States."

Fox spokesman Ruben Aguilar said he did not mean to offend anyone and the remarks were made in defense of Mexican migrants.

Fox's comments were about a new U.S. immigrations law that makes it more difficult for illegal immigrants to get amnesty. It also requires states to verify the legality of those seeking a driver's licenses and eases the way for the federal government to override environmental laws to build more barriers along the California-Mexico border.

Jackson told reporters in Mexico that Fox expressed regret for the remark, EL Universal reported Wednesday. Fox is scheduled to meet with the Rev. Al Sharpton later in the week.
