Lithuania's Adamkus may mediate in Ukraine

VILNIUS, Lithuania, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus is the latest figure from central and eastern Europe to be asked to mediate in the crisis in Ukraine.

Lithuania's Delfi news service reported Thursday outgoing Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma had urged Adamkus to act as an intermediary following Sunday's disputed presidential elections in Ukraine.

Poland's current President Aleksander Kwasniewski has also been invited by Kuchma to mediate while former president and ex-Solidarity leader Lech Walesa was in Ukraine Thursday on a one day visit to try and bring the two sides together.

According to official results, reformist candidate Viktor Yushchenko lost the presidential elections to hardline pro-Moscow candidate Viktor Yanukovich.

However, the Ukrainian opposition, the United States, the European Union and Nato have all said the elections were deeply flawed.

Former Czech President Vaclav Havel has urged the tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the Ukrainian capital Kiev to keep up their protests.

Havel led his country to freedom after mass demonstrations against communism in 1989.
