Kerry VP announcement nears

WASHINGTON, July 5 (UPI) -- Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., is near to announcing his choice for a running mate, MSNBC reported Monday.

Kerry, who was in Pittsburgh Monday for a barbecue co-hosted with his wife, philanthropist Teresa Heinz-Kerry, might announce his vice presidential pick as early as Tuesday, the network said.

The potential running mates mentioned most frequently are two former Kerry opponents, ex-U.S. House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., and retiring North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who is leaving the Senate after just one term.
