Kerry leads, Dean surges - claim

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Early results from New Hampshire show John Kerry in the lead but Howard Dean doing surprising well in second place, National Review claimed Tuesday.

The conservative, New York-based magazine in its political "The Corner" column said that early returns in the Granite State's primary, the first in the nation, showed Sen. Kerry from Massachusetts in first place as expected with 36 percent, but Dean, the former Vermont governor, closing the gap to only five percent and coming in at an impressive 31 percent.

The column also said the early returns showed North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and retired general Wesley Clark tied for third with 12 percent each, a return that would be disappointing for Clark but good for Edwards. The report put Sen. Joe Lieberman an anemic fifth, a showing that could drop him out of the race.
