Not running, Springer spent $1.1 million

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Federal Election Commission records show trash talk show host Jerry Springer spent nearly $1.1 million on his abortive race for U.S. Senate.

According to the Oct. 20 issue of Roll Call, a tabloid covering Washington politics, third-quarter 2003 fundraising reports filed with the FEC by Springer's exploratory committee show the largest expenditures went for polling and media services.

The largest expenditure, Roll Call says, went to the Alexandria, Va.-based media firm Trippi, McMahon and Squier Inc.

The firm was paid in excess of $400,000 for media work including the production of a 30-minute fundraising infomercial.

One of the partners in the firm, Joe Trippi, is currently managing the presidential campaign of frontrunning Democrat Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont.

Another $220,000 was paid out to two different polling firms for survey research work.

Springer, the FEC document shows, made 29 contributions to his effort, totaling more than $1.1 million, between January and the end of September.
