May 10 (UPI) -- English soccer star Wayne Rooney has agreed to a deal in principle to join Major League Soccer club D.C. United.

Sky Sports and the BBC reported the deal to be worth at least $16.2 million. Sky Sports reported that the deal was drafted over the last several weeks and included several visits to the United States by Rooney's agent Paul Stretford.

The BBC reported that nothing has been signed yet and the forward could still choose to stay at Goodison Park with Everton. Rooney, 32, rejoined his hometown squad in July after 13 seasons at Manchester United.

His new contract runs through the 2020 MLS season, according to the BBC. Rooney's deal with Everton has an option for a third year.

Sources told the Washington Post Tuesday that Rooney was in "serious talks" with D.C. United. Rooney suffered an injury in Saturday's draw against Southampton in Liverpool, England.
