Seahawks to hire Ravens DC Mike Macdonald as head coach

Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The Seattle Seahawks are expected to hire Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their head coach, replacing Pete Carroll.

Sources told NFL Network, ESPN and The Athletic about the hire Wednesday afternoon. Macdonald, 36, will be the youngest coach in the NFL.

Macdonald was the Ravens defensive coordinator over the last two seasons. The Ravens allowed the fewest points and sixth-fewest yards in the league in 2023. They also owned the No. 6 pass defense and No. 14 run defense.

The Ravens allowed the third-fewest points and ninth-fewest yards in 2022. They owned the No. 3 run defense and No. 26 pass defense last season.

Macdonald was a graduate assistant and a quality control coach at Georgia from 2010 through 2013. He was an intern for the Ravens in 2014. Macdonald served as a defensive assistant for the Ravens in 2014 and 2016. He coached defensive backs in 2017 and linebackers from 2018 through 2020.

Macdonald was defensive coordinator at Michigan in 2021 under coach Jim Harbaugh, the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

The Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders also showed interest in the former Ravens defensive coordinator during this hiring cycle. The Commanders are the only NFL team still looking for a head coach.

The Seahawks announced Jan. 10 that Pete Carroll would step down as head coach and move into an advisory role.
