Hall of Fame GM Ron Wolf upset son didn't land Green Bay Packers job

Hall of Fame general manager Ron Wolf didn't sound as if he was in a celebratory mood after the Green Bay Packers named Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager.

After all, Wolf's 35-year-old son, Eliot, also interviewed for the position to succeed Ted Thompson.

"At least he had the opportunity to interview for it," Ron Wolf told ESPN in a phone interview. "Obviously the people up there don't think he's worthy or they would've hired him. End of discussion."

The younger Wolf remains as the director of football operations with the Packers.

"He obviously has other opportunities if he wants them, but I'm very hopeful that he'll be here," Gutekunst said on Monday. The 44-year-old Gutekunst takes over the role from Thompson, who will remain as senior adviser to football operations with the Packers.

Wolf would require permission from the Packers to explore options because he's still under contract. He could not leave for any job other than general manager, although ESPN reported that Browns general manager John Dorsey, who is a former Packers personnel executive, planned to pursue Wolf.

Wolf has been with the Packers since 2003, when he joined the team as a pro personnel assistant under then coach/general manager Mike Sherman.
