Ryan Nassib: Jacksonville Jaguars sign quarterback to active roster

Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Quarterback Ryan Nassib is now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jacksonville announced the signing on Monday. The Jaguars placed safety Calvin Pryor on their injured reserve list in a corresponding move and waived defensive back Doran Grant from their injured reserve list.

Nassib, 27, has completed 9-of-10 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown in five NFL appearances. He entered the NFL as a fourth round pick by the New York Giants in the 2013 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-2, 223-pound passer joined the Giants under then head coach Tom Coughlin, who is now the Jaguars' executive vice president of football operations. The Giants released Nassib this offseason and signed with the New Orleans Saints on June 12. He was released again on Sept. 2.

But Coughlin isn't Nassib's only Jaguars connection.

The quarterback played under current coach Doug Marrone at Syracuse when Marrone coached the Orange from 2009 through 2012. He also played under Jaguars offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett at Syracuse.

Nassib torched the record books at Syracuse, breaking the single-season records for total offense, yards per game, passing yards, touchdown passes, completions and first downs.

Nassib's brother, Carl Nassib, plays defensive end for the Cleveland Browns.

The Jaguars currently have Chad Henne backing up starter Blake Bortles. Bortles had a terrible showing in Sunday's loss to the Tennessee Titans, completing 20-of-34 passes for 223 yards, one score and two interceptions. He also lost a fumble and was sacked twice.

"I think it was a combination of the turnovers and the penalties," Bortles told reporters Sunday. "I think you can't turn it over, three times is tough. Two picks and a fumble and then the penalties. You're playing from behind the six and it's first-and-20, second-and-20, second-and-15. That makes it tough to call plays, tough to execute plays when you are playing from behind the chains like that. I think it was a bit of a combination of both. We were never really able to get anything rolling."

Jacksonville battles the Baltimore Ravens at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
