NFL won't investigate incident involving Seattle Seahawks' Michael Bennett

The NFL will not investigate the Seattle Seahawks' Michael Bennett even though the head of the Las Vegas police union asked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to do so in regards to an incident after the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas.

Bennett said Las Vegas police threatened to "blow his head off" for "doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time" after a shooting in the area.

The Las Vegas police saw things differently. Their version of events said the defensive end was detained after Metro officers "had reasonable suspicion" to detain him until they could determine whether he was involved in a shooting, and race played no role, despite Bennett's account.

"I hope to have a discussion with Commissioner Goodell so we can have a conversation about these allegations that our officers are racist and racially profiled Mr. Bennett," Detective Steve Grammas, president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, said in a phone interview with USA Today Sports. "We don't like players from the National Football League making false allegations, which, I feel, is a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy."

The NFL concluded there was no cause to launch any probe.

"There is no allegation of a violation of the league's personal conduct policy and therefore there is no basis for an NFL investigation," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote in an email to USA Today Sports.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said Wednesday that an internal investigation was launched. He also confirmed that the officer at the center of the incident did not have his body camera on.

McMahill, who said both officers who dealt with Bennett were Hispanic, said he had found "no evidence that race played any role in this incident."

Bennett was detained for 10 minutes, according to McMahill.
