Jacksonville Jaguars release Branden Albert, sign RB Grimes

Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Branden Albert decided to end his brief retirement this week and now he has been released.

The Jacksonville Jaguars cut the veteran left tackle on Friday.

Jacksonville also signed running back Jonathan Grimes and waived/injured running back Tyler Gaffney. If Gaffney's clears waivers Saturday he will revert to the Jaguars' reserve/injured list.

Grimes has 619 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 141 carries and 53 catches for 436 yards and a touchdown in 53 career games. He also spent time with the Houston Texans and the New York Jets. Grimes also played in two games in 2012 for the Jaguars. The Houston Texans originally picked him up as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Grimes has three career starts. He played collegiately at William & Mary.

Albert, 32, announced his retirement in July. He announced that he wanted to return this week and was later placed on the Jaguars' reserve/retired list. He is now a free agent. The two-time Pro Bowl selection was traded in February from the Miami Dolphins to the Jaguars for a seventh-round pick.

On Monday, July 31, OL Branden Albert informed Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone that he was stepping away from the team," the Jaguars said in a statement on Tuesday.

"On Friday, August 4, Albert approached the team about the opportunity to return to the NFL at a later date."

"On Monday, August 7, team officials met with Albert and mutually agreed to place him on the club's reserve/retired list."

"The team will provide no further comment on this situation."

Jacksonville currently has 90 players on its roster.
