Green Bay Packers' Martellus Bennett responds to rookie's comments about dying on field

July 31 (UPI) -- NFL veteran Martellus Bennett kept it candid when responding to New York Jets rookie Jamal Adams calling the football field the "perfect place to die."

Bennett is entering his 10th pro season. He joined the Green Bay Packers as a free agent this offseason.

Commissioner Roger Goodell had a fan forum Monday with the New York Jets. The get-together featured Adams and veteran running back Matt Forte. About 150 season ticket holders attended and asked questions at the event, according to ESPN.

Eventually, the conversation topic became CTE and player safety. Adams made it known about his love for the game.

"Literally, if I had the perfect place to die, I'd die on the field," Adams said, according to ESPN.

"I can speak for a lot of guys that play the game," Adams said. "We live and breathe it. This is what we're so passionate about. Literally, if I had a perfect place to die, I would die on the field. And that's not a lie. There's so much sacrifice that we go through as a team, and just connecting as one and winning ball games. There's nothing like playing the game of football. But again, I'm all about making the game safer."

Last week, a study from the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that 99 percent of former players' brains had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Bennett called rookies out.

"I hope all these young cats that are willing to die for the game of football find a higher purpose in life," he tweeted.

"Look football is great but I ain't dying for this [expletive]. Lol," Bennett said.
