The 32-year-old Bethea was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday.

The 49ers saved approximately $5.75 million by releasing Bethea, an 11-year veteran who spent his first eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

Bethea said the separation was by his request.

"I asked for my release," Bethea told ESPN. "I think it was a better fit for both parties. I want to take some time to explore my options. I still got some ball left in me."

Bethea started 39 games over the past three seasons for the 49ers. He had 110 tackles last season while also having one interception and one forced fumble.

He has 19 career interceptions in 162 NFL games.
