Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger officially was ruled out of Sunday's game against the New England Patriots, coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday.

Backup Landry Jones will get the nod in place of Roethlisberger, who had surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee Monday. Tomlin did not speculate on the length of absence for the 34-year-old Roethlisberger, who sustained the injury on a play in which he was intercepted by safety Reshad Jones during Sunday's 30-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Landry was on the field for a full series in place of Roethlisberger, who returned to play the entire second half and finished 19 of 34 for 189 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Roethlisberger entered the contest averaging 299.2 yards passing per game.

Pittsburgh (4-2) will have a bye week after Sunday's game (4:25 p.m., ET) versus New England (5-1), which would essentially give Roethlisberger 16 days between the injury and his next likely practice on Nov. 3.

Jones threw an incomplete pass Sunday on his only attempt against the Dolphins. He started two games last season and had three touchdowns and four interceptions, completing 32 of 55 passes for 513 yards.
