Yankees' Corey Kluber throws no-hitter vs. Rangers

May 20 (UPI) -- Two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber said he never witnessed a no-hitter during his 11-year MLB career, until he threw one himself in the New York Yankees latest win over the Texas Rangers.

Kluber threw nine strikeouts and allowed one walk on 101 pitches in the 2-0 win against his former team Wednesday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. He used an array of fastballs, curveballs and changeups in the 71-strike effort.

"I've never been part of one or witnessed one, let alone thrown one," Kluber told reporters. "So, more than anything, it was a lot of fun to be a part of."

The no-hitter was the first for a Yankees player since David Cone's gem against the Montreal Expos on July 18, 1999 at Yankee Stadium. Kluber's no-hitter also was the the second thrown in as many days.

Spencer Turnbull threw a no-hitter in the Detroit Tigers win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday in Seattle. Kluber is the sixth pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season.

Kluber struck out the first two hitters of the game to spark a streak of seven-consecutive retired batters. He threw four balls to Charlie Culberson for his only walk in the bottom of the third inning. He proceeded to retire the final 20 hitters in order.

Tyler Wade and D.J. LeMahieu provided run support for Kluber in the top of the sixth inning. Rangers starter Hyeon-Jong Yang walked Kyle Higashioka to start the frame. Wade followed with an RBI triple to center field. LeMahieu plated Wade with an RBI sacrifice fly in the next at-bat.

Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres was the only player with multiple hits in the game. Torres went 2 for 2 with a walk in the victory.

Yang allowed three hits, two runs and four walks in 5 1/3 innings to drop to 0-1 this season.

The Rangers (19-26) host the Yankees (24-19) in the final game of the series at 2:05 p.m. EDT Thursday at Globe Life Field.
