TORONTO -- Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Taylor Cole was put on the 10-day disabled list Thursday after suffering a broken right toe when he was hit by a comebacker during his major-league debut against the New York Yankees on Wednesday night.

The Blue Jays recalled right-hander Chris Smith from Triple-A Buffalo to take his place.

Also, Blue Jays designated hitter Kendrys Morales was a late scratch from the game against the Yankees on Thursday night because of illness.

Jose Bautista was moved from right field to DH and Ezequiel Carrera was inserted into the lineup as right fielder.

It will be the second straight game that Morales has missed. He was given the day off Wednesday when Steve Pearce was used at DH.

Cole, 27, allowed six hits and four runs in one inning against the Yankees. He remained in the game after being hit on the foot on an infield single by Didi Gregorius to open the ninth inning. He had entered the game in the eighth.

Cole was selected by Toronto in the 29th round of the 2011 draft and has an ERA of 3.56 in 128 career minor-league games (117 starts).

This will be the third stint with Toronto for Smith, who made his major-league debut June 27 in Baltimore. He is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in four games with Toronto and 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA in 22 games with Buffalo.
