Boston Red Sox's Pablo Sandoval snaps belt, strikes out

By Alex Butler

TORONTO, April 9 (UPI) -- Pablo Sandoval will make even more people question the apparent 20 pounds he has lost since last season, after breaking his belt during an at-bat Saturday.

Travis Shaw has already overtaken the former Boston Red Sox third baseman for the job. Questions about Sandoval's weight exploded after an unflattering photo of the slugger went viral this offseason. Sandoval assured media members that nobody asked him to lose weight.

In Saturday's game, Sandoval faced pitcher R.A. Dickey. During an-at bat, he swung and missed, while his belt snapped open. He could not get it to close again and struck out on the next pitch.

The Red Sox still owe Sandoval $77 million through 2019. 'Kung Fu Panda' hit 10 home runs and brought in 47 RBI last season, while hitting .245.

Sandoval, 29, had earned just one at-bat in the Red Sox's first three games entering Saturday. Sandoval was 0-for-4, with three strike outs and a walk Saturday in the Red Sox's 8-4 win against the Toronto Blue Jays. Shaw was 1-for-5, with an RIB, but also struck out three times.
