Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry reported to the team's facility on Sunday and signed his one-year franchise tender worth about $10.806 million.

Berry will practice with the Chiefs on Monday. Berry was not required to report to training camp and cannot be fined for missing time because he was designated a franchise player.

"It's good to have him back," head coach Andy Reid said Sunday. "He's got a smile on his face and he's ready to go. We'll get him back in there and get him into football shape now. He's in great shape. It's just (a matter of) getting him back into football shape.''

Berry, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, and the Chiefs couldn't come to an agreement on terms on a multi-year contract before the July 15 deadline. That left Berry with no other option but to sign the Chiefs' one-year offer if he wanted play this season.

Berry missed the entire training camp and three preseason games. He likely won't play in Thursday night's final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers at Arrowhead Stadium.

However, Reid expects Berry to be available for the Sept. 11 regular-season opener at home against the San Diego Chargers.

"I would probably lean against playing him Thursday," Reid said. "I would just give him time within practice to get himself ready for the opener.''

Last season, Berry made a comeback from Hodgkin's lymphoma, which kept him out of the 2014 season. He was named the 2015 Comeback Player of the Year.

The 27-year-old Berry played in all 16 games (15 starts) last season, recording 61 tackles and two interceptions.
