The San Diego Chargers lost a slot receiver before playing a preseason game after Stevie Johnson underwent surgery to repair a meniscus tear he sustained during a practice early in training camp.

NFL.com reported that the procedure was a success but the rehab will be longer than first anticipated. Johnson is expected to miss the 2016 season.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, if Johnson lands on injured reserve, he would still pocket his entire $2.9 million salary, and he would count $3.9 million against the salary cap.

Johnson, 30, finished last season -- his first with the Chargers -- with 45 receptions for 497 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. He also has played for the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers during his career and has 34 touchdown catches.

To help fill the void, the Chargers signed former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones on Aug. 2.

San Diego also added wide receiver Travis Benjamin during the offseason, and it returns wide receiver Keenan Allen, tight end Antonio Gates and running back Danny Woodhead as primary targets for quarterback Philip Rivers.
