FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Is Darrelle Revis beginning to plan a position change?

Revis, the future Hall of Fame cornerback who had the worst season of his career last year, told New York's WFAN on Thursday that he won't be surprised if he finishes his career at safety.

"There's probably a conversation in the future regarding me maybe moving my position -- maybe to safety or doing some other things," Revis said.

It was the second time since training camp began that Revis has suggested he'd be amenable to transitioning to safety as he gets deeper into his 30s. Revis, who turned 31 in July and is recovering from off-season wrist surgery, told ESPN New York last week that moving to safety is "... something I'd want to gravitate to. It's definitely a conversation."

The willingness to move to a less demanding position in order to maximize what is left of his skills would seem to run counter to the pride with which Revis carries himself. But as he's proven during contract negotiations, he's also very shrewd about his legacy. So what better way to minimize the discussion about his inevitable fade than to get in front of it?

For now, Revis as a safety is nothing more than an interesting training camp sidebar. Which means it is of little concern to head coach Todd Bowles.

"I see him playing corner right now," Bowles said following Thursday's practice. "I don't see the future. Right now, it's the present."

--Matt Forte is going to miss the Jets' first preseason game. Is the first regular season game also in danger?

Forte, the eight-year veteran who was the biggest free agent imported by the Jets during the off-season, has yet to fully participate in practice due to a hamstring injury he suffered prior to training camp. Head coach Todd Bowles admitted Thursday that Forte won't play in the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 11. After that?

"Right now, he's not in jeopardy of missing any time," Bowles said. "But we'll see as the days go by."

Like most head coaches, Bowles slow-plays injury news. And since Forte, 30, doesn't need many preseason reps to get ready for the season, the true indication of his readiness for the season opener on Sept. 11 probably won't arrive until the third exhibition game on Aug. 27, when the Jets "visit" their MetLife Stadium co-tenants, the New York Giants.
