Rafael Nadal rolls to 40th career win in Madrid

Rafael Nadal needed just 78 minutes to cruise into the third round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday.

The fifth-seeded Nadal sailed to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Andrey Kuznetsov in the second round to record his 11th consecutive victory.

The win was also Nadal's 40th career victory in Madrid.

Nadal's next opponent will either be American Sam Querrey or France's Lucas Pouille. Those two meet on Wednesday.

Among other men's matches, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro upset 14th-seeded Dominic Thiem 7-6 (5), 6-3 of Austria; 13th-seeded Gael Monfils of France was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over South Africa's Kevin Anderson; Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut, seeded 15th, defeated Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 7-5, and Australia's Nick Kyrgios prevailed 7-6 (7), 6-4 over Argentina's Guido Pella.

Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas defeated Philipp Kohlschreider of Germany 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5); Fabio Fognini of Italy beat Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-4; American Jack Sock ousted France's Benoit Paire 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5); Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta was a 7-6 (3), 6-3 winner over Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov; Croatia's Borna Coric was a 6-2, 6-2 victor over Spain's Nicolas Almagro; Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas defeated France's Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-4, and American Denis Kudla defeated Croatia's Ivo Karlovic 6-7 (9), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4).

In women's play, sixth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania defeated Italy's Karin Knapp 6-1, 6-1; Switzerland's Timea Baczinszky was a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Russia's Ekaterina Makarova, and Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro dispatched Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-3, 6-2.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia advanced via walkover against Italy's Camila Giorgi as did Australia's Samantha Stosur against 11th-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.
