Indianapolis Colts place QB Charlie Whitehurst on IR

By The Sports Xchange

The Indianapolis Colts' quarterback situation took another hit on Monday when Charlie Whitehurst was placed on injured reserve with a pulled hamstring.

Whitehurst was in line to start this Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans because Matt Hasselbeck suffered a shoulder injury in last Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins.

But Whitehurst also got hurt against the Dolphins. He was able to finish the game but the injury proved more serious on Monday.

In addition to Hasselbeck's injury, first-stringer Andrew Luck is still recovering from a lacerated kidney and a partially torn abdominal muscle he sustained on Nov. 10.

That leaves Stephen Morris as the lone healthy quarterback. Morris was signed off the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad last week and has never appeared in an NFL game.

One quarterback the Colts are expected to work out is former Tampa Bay first-round pick Josh Freeman.

The Bleacher Report reported that Freeman will be working out for the team on Monday. Freeman, 27, has not taken a snap since 2013. He spent some time with the Miami Dolphins this offseason.

Indianapolis also placed guard Hugh Thornton (ankle) on injured reserve. Thornton had started 12 games for the Colts this season.

The Colts are 7-8 and holding on to slim playoff hopes as they play the Titans. A Cincinnati Bengals win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night clinches the AFC South for the Houston Texans. If Denver wins Monday, the Texans must win at home against Jacksonville or hope Tennessee beats Indianapolis in Week 17.
