Dolphins' coach Dan Campbell knows Cowboys well

By The Sports Xchange

DAVIE, Fla. -- Interim coach Dan Campbell of the Miami Dolphins grew up in Texas and was a Dallas Cowboys fan. He said he liked the Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin Cowboys. But he goes back farther.

"The high school years it was certainly 'The Trio,'" Campbell said. "But before that I loved (Tony) Dorsett. I loved Danny White. That was kind of my growing up era.

"I loved Randy White, Too Tall Jones. I mean I was a big fan of all those guys."

Campbell is wary of quarterback Tony Romo of the Cowboys returning for this week's game against the Dolphins after missing eight weeks because of a broken left clavicle.

"Is there a missing piece? Is there a missing link? (Tony) Romo could be that guy for them," Capmbell said.

--Running backs Lamar Miller and Jay Ajayi might combine to form solid a 1-2 punch in the backfield. Miller (521 yards rushing, 319 yards receiving) appears to be the No. 1 option, although Ajayi (89 yards rushing, 8.1 yards per carry) seems to be providing a strong second choice.

Even with Ajayi in the mix for the last two games, Miller had a season-best 22 touches last week against Philadelphia. Miami could use the boost. The Dolphins are 19th in the NFL in rushing at 102.8 yards per game.

--Miami is minus-3 in giveaway/takeaway margin. Ex-coach Joe Philbin's goal for the team was plus-10. The Dolphins are 3-0 when they win the turnover battle (they tied Houston, 1-1, in their other victory).

NOTES: Linebacker Jelani Jenkins (left ankle) was wearing a walking boot on Wednesday and didn't practice. Jenkins would be a costly loss if he doesn't play Sunday vs. Dallas. ... Cornerback Brice McCain (knee), who didn't finish Sunday's game at Philadelphia, was practicing Wednesday. He probably will return to his role as the slot cornerback in the nickel package. ... Cornerback Brent Grimes, who missed Sunday's game at Philadelphia because of food poisoning, practiced Wednesday. Grimes will return to his starting job and might even shadow Dallas WR Dez Bryant this week. Grimes covered Houston's DeAndre Hopkins and Buffalo's Sammy Watkins earlier this season. ... Wide receiver DeVante Parker practiced Wednesday but it's still difficult to determine whether his surgically-repaired left foot is fully healed. The wide receivers were only running half-speed routes for the portion of practice media was allowed to watch. ... Right tackle Ja'Wuan James (toe) didn't practice Wednesday. James, injured against New England, is expected to miss multiple games.
