Calgary Flames down Phoenix Coyotes, move into 3rd in Pacific

Sean Monahan scored the winning goal in the third period as the Calgary Flames took a 3-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday.

Calgary moved two points ahead of Los Angeles for third place in the Pacific Division. The Kings lost to the Oilers on Tuesday. The Flames will host the Kings on Thursday.

Johnny Gaudreau and David Jones also scored for the Flames, who have won four of five. Jonas Hiller allowed two goals on 24 shots.

Craig Cunningham posted a goal and an assist while B.J. Crombeen also lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who have lost four of five. Mike Smith allowed three goals on 32 shots.

Calgary took a 2-1 lead just 1:13 into the third as Michael Ferland's shot from the slot was stopped, but the rebound came out front and Jones buried it for his 14th of the season.

Arizona tied the game at 7:44 when Kyle Chipchura stole the puck off Hiller in the right corner and sent it over to the left side where Cunningham had a wide-open net for his third of the season.

Monahan, though, gave the Flames a 3-2 lead at 9:26 as he skated down the right wing and pulled up at the circle, sliding over to the slot before snapping it in.

Arizona pulled Smith with 1 1/2 minutes to go, but Calgary was able to hang on for the win.

The Flames scored at 8:49 of the first on the power play when Gaudreau potted his 23rd of the season, but the Coyotes tied the game with 2:51 left in the second as Crombeen scored his third of the season off a rebound.

Arizona plays in Vancouver on Thursday ... Calgary was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Arizona didn't have a man advantage during the game ... Dennis Wideman posted two assists for the Flames.
