Adrian Peterson reinstated, expected to lineup for Vikings on Sunday against Saints

"We believe this is a matter of due process and we should allow the legal system to proceed so we can come to the most effective conclusions and then determine the appropriate course of action," said the Vikings owners in a statement.

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been reactivated by the Vikings organization after being indicted by a Texas grand jury for hitting his son with a tree branch.

Peterson was deactivated before Week 2 of the NFL season when news broke he struck his son with a tree branch so hard the 4-year-old suffered cuts and bruising on his back, buttocks and legs.

"We take very seriously any matter that involves the welfare of a child," Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf said in a statement.

"At this time, however, we believe this is a matter of due process and we should allow the legal system to proceed so we can come to the most effective conclusions and then determine the appropriate course of action. This is a difficult path to navigate, and our focus is on doing the right thing. We believe we are at a juncture where the most appropriate next step is to allow the judicial process to move forward."

With the 29-year-old two-time rushing NFL champion out of its already thin lineup, the Vikings were blown out 30-7 by the New England Patriots on Sunday. Backup running back Matt Asiata rushed for 36 yards and the Vikings lone touchdown and struggling quarterback Matt Cassel threw four interceptions.

If convicted, the 2012 NFL MVP faces up to $10,000 in fines and two years in prison. Because Peterson has no prior criminal record he could only face probation.
