WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Ryan Miller made 28 saves and Cody Hodgson scored the only goal of a shootout Sunday, hoisting the Buffalo Sabres over Washington 2-1.
Following a scoreless overtime, Miller made stops on Eric Fehr and Alex Ovechkin in the tiebreaker and Washington's Nicklas Backstrom missed to start the third round.

Tyler Ennis scored for Buffalo during a first-period power play.
Grubauer turned aside 30-of-31 shots for the Capitals, whose two-game winning streak was snapped.
Jason Chimera got Washington's only goal.
