TORONTO, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Phil Kessel scored twice and Jonathan Bernier stopped 41-of-43 shots Sunday in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 5-2 spanking of Carolina.
Dion Phaneuf, Nikolai Kulemin and Paul Ranger also scored for the Leafs, who recorded a second straight win and avoided overtime for the first time in five games.

Bernier, coming off a victory in Friday's 4-3 shootout decision over Buffalo, was solid for a second consecutive contest.
Justin Faulk and Nathan Gerbe scored for the Hurricanes.
Cam Ward turned aside 22-of-26 shots.
