NHL: St. Louis 5, New York Rangers 3

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- David Backes scored twice during a three-goal outburst in the second period that boosted the unbeaten St. Louis Blues over the New York Rangers 5-3 Saturday.

Backes' tally 5:11 into the middle period put the Blues ahead to stay at 2-1 and his second of the game with 1:33 left in the period gave St. Louis a 4-2 advantage. Backes also notched an assist.

Alex Steen provided a goal and three assists for St. Louis, which improved to 4-0-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Derek Roy added a goal and an assist, while Jaroslav Halak earned the victory with 26 saves.

Ryan Callahan scored twice, and Brad Richards supplied a goal and an assist for New York, which lost for the fourth time in five games.

Martin Biron started in net for the Rangers and was pulled after yielding four goals on 17 shots. Henrik Lundqvist relieved and stopped 16-of-17 shots the rest of the way.
