MLB: Boston 20, Detroit 4

BOSTON, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Will Middlebrooks hit a grand slam and David Ortiz drove in four runs with two homers Wednesday as part of Boston's 20-4 mauling of Detroit.

The Red Sox piled up their largest run total of the season, blasting seven long balls, scoring in all but the first inning and exploding for eight in the sixth.

It was Boston's ninth win in 11 games and the Red Sox took two out of three from Detroit in a series involving the teams with the two best records in the American League.

Middlebrooks contributed his grand slam while Boston was scoring eight runs on just four hits in the sixth. Boston capitalized on three walks and a hit batter during the inning.

Ortiz hit two-run homers in both the fourth and seventh innings while the Red Sox also came up with home runs from Stephen Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Nava, Ryan Lavarnway and Mike Napoli.

Ryan Dempster (8-9) picked up the easy win, giving up four runs on six hits over six innings. Boston piled up nine runs on seven hits in five-plus innings against Rick Porcello (11-8).
