ATLANTA, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Home runs by Justin Upton and Chris Johnson brought Atlanta four runs in the first inning and the Braves rolled to their 14th straight win, 5-0 over Miami.
Atlanta has put together the longest major league winning streak in a decade and the Braves moved within one victory of tying the longest such streak in club history.
The franchise record of 15 consecutive wins came early in the 2000 season.
Upton gave the Braves the lead with a solo homer in the opening frame and Johnson then hit a three-run blast. The other Atlanta run also came on a homer from Brian McCann in the third.
Brandon Beachy (1-0) made his third start of the season after returning from elbow surgery and he gave up just three hits over eight innings to claim the victory. He struck out six and walked one, after which Scott Downs and Luis Ayala completed the shutout.
Jacob Turner (3-4) surrendered all five runs on five hits in five innings to absorb the loss.
Atlanta needs four more wins in succession to move into the Top 10 on the all-time winning streak list. The major league record for consecutive victories is 26, set 97 years ago by the New York Giants.
