MIAMI, July 8 (UPI) -- Justin Upton's tiebreaking two-run double in the 14th inning triggered a six-run outburst Monday that carried the Atlanta Braves over Miami 7-1.
After the two teams battled through seven scoreless innings in a 1-1 tie, Miami's Chris Hatcher (0-1) issued walks to Reed Johnson and Jason Heyward and with one out.
Upton followed by lining a pitch into the left-field corner, plating both runners.
Gerald Laird delivered a two-run hit, Chris Johnson singled home another run and the Braves added a tally on Justin Ruggiano's error before the inning was through.
Upton finished with three RBI for National League East-leading Atlanta, which took the first of a three-game series.
David Carpenter (2-0) logged the victory with two scoreless innings.
Marlins starter Kevin Slowey tossed five shutout innings in a no-decision.
Ruggiano provided Miami's only RBI in the loss.
