Langer shares lead in rain-delayed Champions Tour event

GLENVIEW, Ill., June 21 (UPI) -- Bernhard Langer, who has posted his 17th and 18th Champions Tour wins this year, grabbed a share of the lead Friday at the inaugural Encompass Championship.

A long weather delay caused the first round to be suspended by darkness with 23 players still on the North Shore Country Club course.

Langer had completed his opening round with a 5-under 67, the same score turned in by Craig Stadler and Duffy Waldorf.

Sandy Lyle, Blaine McCallister, David Frost, Jeff Hart, Jeff Sluman, Gary Hallberg and Scott Hoch all shot a 4-under 68. Peter Senior was also at 4-under with two holes to play and Mark Calcavecchia was at 4-under with four holes to go.

Another 14 players stood at 3-under with Corey Pavin, Bob Tway and Hal Sutton among those who had posted a 69.

Langer is second in the season-long points race, having won this year at the ACE Group Classic and the Greater Gwinnett Championship.
